Proper Mulching
Proper mulching techniques can improve the overall health of a tree by regulating temperature and moisture. The Healthy Tree way is up to 4 inches deep and NOT against the stem of the tree. New science is pointing to no mulch on the root ball at all. By not mulching the root ball it encourges the roots to venture out and find moisture farther out of the hole causing more roots and faster growth.
No More Volcano Mulching!
When done improperly mulch can cause negative effects. A properly planted tree will avoid Stem Girdling Roots (SGR) however, SGR can also be caused by too much mulch or mulch against the stem of the tree. This practice is known as volcano mulching. Unfortunately, the public thinks it looks great and don't realize how it hurts the tree. Volcano mulching creates many problems for a tree. This includes, lack of oxygen, and moisture. Please, leave the volcanos in Hawaii! Mahalo!
